Improved focus, better outcomes in Newborn Life Support

Despite progress in Newborn Life Support training programs, adherence to the ERC/AHA guidelines still needs improvement. In up to more than 54% of the neonatal resuscitation procedures the delivery room teams deviate from these official neonatal guidelines. More complex resuscitations are associated with even poorer adherence to the guidelines. Using posters, checklists and cognitive aids have proven to show no improvement.

How can we improve guideline adherence?

  • Improving training programs using simulation.
  • Improving the frequency of these trainings.
  • Use Clinical Decision Support to help the Delivery rooms teams.

Multiple studies have shown a significant reduction of errors and deviations and therefore improving adherence to guideline in different simulated resuscitation settings, using a Clinical Decision Support System.

‘Decision support tools (DSTs) are designed to fundamentally reduce cognitive load by decreasing cognitive demand and making decision making less prone to human error’ *).

‘Healthcare professionals using a decision support tool exhibit significantly fewer deviations from the neonatal resuscitation program algorithm compared to those working from memory alone during simulated neonatal resuscitation’ *)

The goal is to improve patient outcomes, survival and morbidity, by better guideline adherence. This can be achieved by reducing the cognitive load of the delivery room teams and providing audio-visual cues and feedback using the ARNE NLS decision support system. By reducing the cognitive load and having all information on the ARNE NLS Advisor interface visible for the whole delivery room team, simplifies communication and improves the alignment within the team.

Reaching the Gold Standard in Newborn Life Support comfortably

The European resuscitation council (ERC) and the American Heart Association (AHA) provide standardized guidelines for neonatal resuscitation and facilitation of transition after birth.

These evidenced based guidelines are considered as the golden standard for resuscitation. Newborn life support should be performed, following these guideless, to get the best patient outcomes. The ARNE NLS clinical decision support device makes it easy to adhere to the NLS guidelines, by avoiding mistakes and miss any of the important steps of the NLS algorithm. Simplifying and improving communication for the resus team simultaneously. Optimizing the adherence to the newborn life support gold standard becomes simpler and easier for the delivery room team, resulting in improved focus and better outcomes.

Optimized Newborn Life Support simulation training

Several studies have shown that structured resuscitation training, using standardised formal resuscitation training programmes reduces early neonatal and 28-day mortality. Simulation of real-life Newborn life support procedures is important for these trainings.

The ARNE NLS Advisor is not only designed to be used as clinical decision support system during real-life resuscitation procedures, but for training and simulation also. Using one and the same device for training and real-life procedures improves coherence between real-life and training and is (cost-) efficient.

On the ARNE NLS Advisor is a specific trainings modus available, specially designed for training and simulation purposes. This modus can be used together with the ARNE vital signs simulator, providing input of simulated vital signs readings. No need to use an expensive patient monitoring system, the ARNE vital signs simulator is a web-based application, which can simply be hooked up to the ARNE NLS Advisor during simulation trainings.

Using the ARNE NLS Advisor and vital signs simulator will help the delivery room teams feeling more comfortable, uniformity improves, and the quality of newborn life support training will be optimized.
